Thorough Eye Examinations

Unique care for every eye

Expert Eye Care You Can Trust

At Iconic Opticians, we believe eye care should never be rushed. That’s why we offer 45 minutes for every eye examination – unlike the 20-minute tests often offered by chain opticians, ensuring plenty of time for a detailed, stress-free check-up.

What's Included

An optional OCT scan can also be requested at an additional cost.

Visit Frequency

As NHS-registered opticians, we recommend an eye examination at least every two years, and sooner if you notice changes in your vision or have specific concerns.

Regular check-ups help detect early signs of eye conditions and general health issues like diabetes and high blood pressure.

Before Your Eye Examination

Pre-Examination

We discuss your eye health history and any vision concerns

Getting ready for your appointment

If you are a new patient, please bring any current prescription glasses or contact lenses. If you are a current contact lens wearer, we recommend wearing your glasses to the appointment.

Arrival and Welcome

When you arrive, our friendly team will check you in and fill out NHS forms if needed.

During Your Eye Examination

Initial Discussion

Our optometrist will sit down with you to discuss your lifestyle, visual needs, any symptoms or concerns, as well as any family history of eye conditions.

Objective Refraction

A series of quick and painless pre-tests will be done to gather baseline information about your eyes. These may include auto-refraction, non-contact tonometer (air puff test), retinal imaging / OCT scan (if required).

Subjective Refraction

This is the part where you look through a trial frame and are asked, "Which is better, lens one or lens two?" Your answers help the optometrist fine-tune your exact prescription.

Eye Health Assessment

Using a special microscope called a slit lamp, the optometrist will examine the front and internal structures of your eyes in detail.

After Your Eye Examination

Results and Discussion

Our optometrist will explain the results of your examination, including your prescription and the overall health of your eyes. They will be happy to answer any questions you have and will discuss any recommendations with you.

If you require a new prescription, our dispensing optician will guide you through our wide selection of frames and lenses. We will take precise measurements to ensure your new glasses fit perfectly and meet your visual needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an eye test take?

A comprehensive eye test at Iconic Opticians typically takes 45 minutes. This allows our optometrist plenty of time to assess your vision, examine the health of your eyes, and discuss any concerns you may have. If you are a contact lens wearer, your appointment may be slightly longer to include a contact lens assessment and fitting.

We always recommend booking an appointment in advance to ensure that our optometrist has dedicated time for you. However, if you are passing by, please feel free to pop in, and we will do our best to accommodate you or book you in for the earliest available slot.

Please bring your current glasses or contact lenses, a list of any medications you’re taking, and your previous prescription if available. If you’re eligible for NHS-funded eye tests, bring any relevant documentation.

A contact lens fitting is usually carried out during a separate appointment or as an extension of your standard eye test. This allows us to assess the curvature of your eye, discuss your lifestyle needs, find the most suitable lens type for you, and teach you how to insert, remove, and care for your lenses safely. Please let us know when booking that you are interested in contact lenses.

Absolutely. Children do not need to be able to read or even speak to have a thorough eye examination. Our optometrists are experienced in working with young children and use a range of age-appropriate techniques, including pictures, symbols, and games, to assess their vision comfortably and accurately.
